If you are trying to get privacy or anonymity, you can forget PPTP because it leaks not only your DNS requests but also your normal traffic. L2TP/IPSec has an acceptable level of protection, is flexible in settings, does not require any additional software (except Linux) and is a good alternative to PPTP.
